Protective effect of nanochitosan-loaded lepidium draba extract on sperm parameters and oxidative stress markers in male rats infected with staphylococcus aureus

Bacterial infections, including Staphylococcus aureus, can impair testicular tissue and sperm quality by causing oxidative stress and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of nanochitosan-loaded - Lepidium draba extract on sperm parameters and oxidative stress indices in rats infected with Staphylococcus aureus. In this experimental study,28 adult male Wistar rats weighing 180-220 g were divided into four groups control, infected with Staphylococcus aureus(108CFU/ml)infected model+receiving nanochitosan (1 ml),and infected model+receiving nanochitosan carrying the plant Lepidium draba extract (200 mg/kg).Treatment was administered for 30 days via gavage. After the end of the period, the animals were anesthetized and epididymal and testicular tissue were extracted to examine sperm parameters (number, viability, sperm morphology) and testicular tissue oxidative stress indices(superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, total antioxidant capacity, and malondialdehhyde).The results showed that in the bacteria-infected group compared to the control group, a significant decrease was observed in sperm parameters (count, viability, normal morphology)and antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, total antioxidant capacity), along with a significant increase in malondialdehyde levels (p < 0.001). In the group treated with chitosan nanoparticles loaded with Lepidium draba extract, a significant increase in sperm parameters and antioxidant levels, as well as a significant decrease in malondialdehyde levels, was observed compared to the infected group (p < 0.05).
