Abstract: |
Global demand for natural and artificial sweeteners in the food industry as alternatives to refined sugar is rising. This trend has prompted further research to evaluate their safety and health effects. The gut microbiome plays a vital role in the metabolism of selected sweeteners, a process that may influence overall health. Recent studies have increasingly focused on the relationship between sweeteners and the gut microbiome.
This review article examines current knowledge regarding the role of the gut microbiome in the metabolism of selected sweeteners. It also investigates the impact of five selected sweeteners and their metabolites on pathways associated with gastrointestinal cancers. Overall, the observed positive effects of sweetener consumption on gastrointestinal cancer pathways—such as apoptosis and cell cycle arrest—warrant further research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
