Abstract:
Amidst growing environmental concerns stemming from non-biodegradable plastics, there has been a significant surge in interest towards producing biodegradable polymers through methods such as chemical treatment, and the utilization of microorganisms and enzymes. These polymers hold substantial potential for mitigating adverse environmental impacts by facilitating safe disposal after their end-of-life. Chemical recycling is one of the most promising technologies that could contribute to circular economy targets by providing solutions to plastic waste; however, it is still at an early stage of development. Furthermore, innovative approaches to enhance barrier properties for food packaging applications and the role of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in elucidating environmental benefits have undergone critical discussion and review. Despite considerable advancements, fundamental challenges, including limitations in mechanical performance, industrial scalability, and ensuring degradation efficacy under real-world environmental conditions, continue to represent key obstacles in fully realizing the potential of these materials. Although offering environmental advantages, the development and widespread application of biodegradable polymers face several challenges. Beyond reducing reliance on fossil fuels, these materials play a significant role in waste management and the development of a circular economy. However, their environmental compatibility, particularly within composting processes, has attracted considerable scientific and industrial attention.
